'Richard III'

venue

Shakespeare House

Date

8th March 2019

Directors

Terry Smith & Laura Smith

March 2019 found Shakespeare’s most notorious monarch in a spring of discontent - Terry and Laura Smith were working on a powerful new production of ‘Richard III’ when disaster struck just a few weeks before the curtain was due to rise. The Guildhall Theatre in Derby, our longtime regular performing space, was unexpectedly closed down due to health and safety concerns and, although efforts were made to find a suitable alternative venue, the short time left available to us meant that securing a space that could do the show justice wasn’t possible and the production had to be cancelled.

As you can probably imagine, this was very disheartening for all involved but thankfully an abridged version of the play with a reduced cast was performed, for one night only, at Shakespeare House on the 8th of March. This allowed a small audience to get a compelling glimpse of what could have been and all in attendance agreed that, as potent and mesmerising as the cut down show was, it was a shame that Derby audiences missed out on what would have undoubtedly have been a stunning production if seen in its entirety.
